Statement on the Forthcoming EU-China Summit Business Roundtable

Background

A business roundtable hosted by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce will take place on the margins of the EU-China Summit on 24th July 2025 in Beijing. The roundtable will comprise two sessions: one with EU and Chinese CEOs, and one with EU and Chinese state leaders. It is planned that President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and Chinese Premier Li Qiang will speak at the latter session, as well as European Chamber President Jens Eskelund.

This year’s CEO roundtable will be attended by 60 representatives from European and Chinese industry and business associations.

Stance

It is positive that industry and government representatives from the EU and China are meeting to discuss the two sides’ trade and investment relationship, which has come under increased scrutiny in recent years. The Chamber looks forward to engaging in frank and candid discussions that might pave the way for further talks, including at the working level, with the aim of improving China’s business environment for its member companies.

“We welcome any opportunity to address China’s leadership to outline our members’ concerns and advocate for change,” said Jens Eskelund, president of the European Chamber. “There are many challenges ahead, but we believe that by facing them head on solutions are possible. We see continued significant potential in the relationship, but the benefits of collaboration must be distributed in a manner seen as fair and equitable by both sides for real progress to happen.”
